What is Squid game?
Despite its explicit scenes of violence, the Netflix series "Squid Game" is very popular with children and young people. Even if adolescents haven't seen the series themselves, they gain insights through YouTube videos, social media posts or in the schoolyard. There, they reenact parts of the series. In our media guide column, Dr. Iren Schulz explains what parents need to know about "Squid Game" and how they can talk to their children about it.

What's it about?
In Squid Game, heavily indebted people take part in seemingly harmless rounds of gambling to win large sums of money. The game is not about ambition and fun, but about life and death - because if you lose, you die. In recent waves, the nine-part series has generated international hype and has been called the most successful Netflix series of all time. Even though Squid Game is officially recommended by Netflix for ages 16 and up, children and teenagers are obviously also watching the series, finding posts about it on popular social media platforms or have bought matching Halloween costumes. The battles are reenacted on school playgrounds and appropriate punishments, such as whistles, are devised for the losers.
What creates enthusiasm?
Indeed, Squid Game, with its bright colors and Asian manga aesthetic, serves a pop-cultural trend that is also popular among girls and boys in this country. At the same time, pushing boundaries and anxiety ( through challenges) in media consumption are typical adolescent phenomena that can be used to gain recognition from friends and a sense of belonging for oneself.
What's the problem?
What is considered problematic is the violence explicitly shown in the series, which is difficult for children and young adolescents to endure and disturbing. Furthermore, drastic violence is legitimized as an acceptable ''game loser'' option. This creates a problematic context for children that they are not yet able to categorize well. Furthermore, many YouTubers and influencers who are popular with children jump on the topic, show content from the series and earn money with it, and do not live up to their responsibility towards their young supporters. Even without having seen it themselves, younger people easily come into contact with the program via social networks.
